Eye Lash Extensions: A Tired Mom’s Best Friend

July 22, 2019

Before having a baby, I never had to think much about my self care routine. I was okay about splurging on beauty products, trying different fads, and committing to whatever upkeep there was involved. But then I had my little girl and like most mamas, my needs fell to the waist side and all those self-care routines just seemed like unnecessary extras. That is of course, until I was turned on to eye lash extensions.

So with that being said, shall we jump right in?

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET THEM?

I’ll be honest, I never would have been interested in pursing extensions had it not been free at first. At the spa I go to, they were in need for lash models and in turn offering free applications. I figured I had nothing to lose when trying them because if I didn’t like them, I would just remove them at home. Well as this post shows, that certainly didn’t happen!

WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE?

All I can tell you is that I absolutely love them. Not only have they made me feel more confident but in general, they have cut the amount of time I spend getting ready in half. Since getting them, I really only ever wear concealer and some powder and still feel great. Best of all, they aren’t obnoxious looking. They provide just enough of a subtle difference that gives your face a pop, which is especially helpful after you’ve had a long night with one of your kiddos.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS LIKE? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

The first time I got the lashes applied was probably the longest and was about 2 hours. Each time you go in, you settle down onto a comfy massage table and then have tape placed below and above your eyes. From here, they place a elastic band of sorts around the top of your forehead, which they use to tuck back hair and also pull the skin around your eyes tighter. I’ll be honest, it is a bit strange at first but after a few minutes you hardly notice the feeling and if you’re like me, will fall asleep. The refill applications tend to be shorter and are usually no more than 1 hour.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

This all depends on the type of eye lashes you get and then the frequency of which you get them refilled. The spa I go to offers mink and synthetic options (the mink are more pricey) and then you can go in as often as you’d like. I believe the price ranges are about $25-$125 per refill. The price increases the longer you wait between refills.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

For me, I typically go every 4 weeks to get them refilled but thats considered pretty long. Of course, I really try and baby them during that time to help keep them looking good but they aren’t by any means perfect looking by the end of that time. I’d say on average most people go every 2-3 weeks.

HOW DO YOU CARE FOR THEM?

Like I said above, the more you baby them the longer they will last. When it comes to washing you face, you can’t use any oils or oil-based makeup removers on them. I would stick with just basic soap and water. Afterwards, you want to dry them very carefully. I recommend dabbing them and avoid rubbing of any kind. Aside from this, you want to be conscious throughout the day of make sure to not pick or rub.

DO THEY MAKE YOU REAL LASHES FALL OUT?

If they are treated the right way, aka no picking, then no they will not. Over time your extensions will fall off on their own, just like your own lashes will. However, if at any time you should feel pain or pulling, call your spa to have them readjusted asap.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXTENSIONS?

Yep, like I mentioned above, there are synthetic options and then mink options. My spa offers a combination of the two, which is what I get. Because I haven’t gotten only the synthetic option, I can’t tell you what they look like but I’m willing to guess that they probably look no different then the mink. On top of this, I should mention that there are different options in terms of styling. You can get a more natural look or a more glamorous look. I have done both and personally like the more glamorous application. They are fuller and bit dramatic looking but over the next 4 weeks I find that they hold up a little nicer.

WHERE DID I GET MINE APPLIED?

The Lily Day Spa in Chester, NJ and use Kathy each time I go. She is so sweet and does an incredible job. For more information, you can check out their website here.

CAN YOU FEEL THEM?

Not at all! At first, this was something I was really concerned about but once they were on, they felt just like my own lashes. In fact, I often had to remind myself of their presence so that I would stop myself from touching or rubbing my eyes.

CAN YOU STILL WEAR EYE MAKEUP?

That’s the best part about them, you really won’t need to. However, if you are wanting to add a little extra you can apply any type of eye make up you want, just no mascara (unless its on your lower lashes). Oh and remember, when it comes to taking off your makeup, no oil based removers!

WHAT IF I HAVE SENSITIVE EYES?

I personally don’t have this problem, so I can’t be sure on this answer. What I will say is that I would recommend that you chat with your lash technician beforehand and ask if they have and recommendations or if they use “sensitive glue.”

So tell me, have you tried out lash extensions? Do you have any other questions I can answer?
